Reading the future
New Scientist article 21 August 1999. It may be possible to identify new-born babies who will grow up to be dyslexic, which may help reduce or eliminate reading problems in childhood. Psychologists in Illinois have correctly predicted dyslexia in 8-year-olds by looking at their brainwaves just hours after birth.
Lost for words
New Scientist article 24 April 1999 about John Stein and Joel Talcott’s work and summarising other recent research on dyslexia and brain development. They think that dyslexia is a result of the brain’s failure to develop links for processing visual and auditory information quickly. It may be caused by the mother producing antibodies to her child’s brain development in the womb.
